If you're gluten-free and heading to New York City, you're in for a treat.
*first a note that I am not gluten-free, however many of my loved ones are, so I have experience here and am happy to report everything recommended is taste tested with rave reviews*
While the city is known for its bagels and pizza—not exactly gluten-free staples—it’s also a paradise for those with dietary restrictions with endless options to choose from. With unique artisanal bakeries to gourmet restaurants, NYC offers a variety of gluten-free options that never compromise on flavor.
In this blog post, we'll take you on a flavorful journey through three must-visit spots: Handroll Bar in Chelsea, Levain Bakery (multiple locations), and Tavola in Hell’s Kitchen.
We’ll also highlight other gluten-free gems to explore, ensuring your NYC food adventure is a satisfying one. These highlighted establishments are my top 3 favorite gluten-free restaurants in the city; the food here is so good you will question if it actually has gluten.
Nestled in the vibrant and eclectic neighborhood of Chelsea, Handroll Bar is an excellent choice for sushi lovers who are gluten-free. The intimate bar setup focuses on freshly made handrolls crafted with precision and care right at the sushi bar. For the gluten-free crowd, Handroll Bar truly shines in its use of gluten-free soy sauce and other accommodations. Since rolls are made to order, and you can observe your food being made, this is a great option for those that are uneasy about dining out with Celiac disease.
What to Order at Handroll:
Spicy Tuna Handroll: Wrapped in seaweed and filled with sushi-grade tuna, a touch of spice, and crisp cucumber, this roll delivers the perfect balance of flavor and texture.
Avocado and Eel Roll: The umami-packed eel paired with creamy avocado creates a flavor explosion. Just confirm that the eel sauce used is gluten-free, which the staff is happy to accommodate.
Hand Roll Set: This tasting pair allows you to explore seasonal offerings and most popular rolls, all customizable to be gluten-free.
Handroll Bar’s commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients makes it a standout for gluten-free diners. The intimate and artistic vibe also adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the meal.
For those with a sweet tooth, Levain Bakery has carved out its name in New York as a must-visit destination—especially for the gluten-free community. Known for its massive, gooey cookies, Levain offers a gluten-free chocolate chip walnut cookie that’s so good you’ll forget it’s gluten-free. Seriously, this cookie is so good I prefer it to the regular.
What to Order:
Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie: These cookies are legendary for a reason. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the combination of melty chocolate and crunchy walnuts will have you hooked.
Seasonal Treats: Levain occasionally offers other gluten-free options, such as muffins or cakes. Check with the store to see what’s available.
Levain’s gluten-free (and vegan!) cookies are made in a separate, designated area to ensure no cross-contamination. This attention to detail makes it a top choice for those with Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
If you’re in the mood for hearty Italian food, especially classic NYC Pizza, Tavola in Hell’s Kitchen is the place to go. Known for its cozy ambiance and traditional Italian dishes, Tavola offers an impressive selection of gluten-free breads, pastas and pizzas.
What to Order:
Gluten-Free Pizza: Made with a thin, crispy gluten-free crust, Tavola's made to order pizza is topped with fresh mozzarella, basil, and a zesty tomato sauce.
Bolognese with Gluten-Free Pasta: The rich, slow-cooked meat sauce pairs perfectly with their gluten-free pasta options.
Lasagna (Only served gluten-free): Tavola’s gluten-free lasagna is a showstopper and the number one seller on their menu, featuring layers of pasta, creamy ricotta, mozzarella, and a robust vegetarian meat sauce that’s absolutely delicious.
Tavola’s staff is well-versed in handling gluten-free requests, ensuring a safe and enjoyable dining experience. Their commitment to authenticity in flavors makes every dish unforgettable. In my opinion, this is the best gluten-free food I have ever had.
Additional Gluten-Free Gems in NYC
While Handroll Bar, Levain Bakery, and Tavola are fantastic, New York City has many other gluten-free-friendly options to explore. Here are two runners up for honorable mentions:
Friedman’s: Located in multiple spots across Manhattan, Friedman’s specializes in comfort food with plenty of gluten-free choices, including a complete gluten free desert menu and even gluten-free chicken and waffles.
Modern Bread and Bagel: A gluten-free bagel shop and bakery on the Upper West Side that serves up incredible bagels, sandwiches, and pastries.
