A Brief History of Moulay Idris: Opening the Doors to Non-Muslims

For centuries, Moulay Idris was a spiritual

sanctuary, forbidden to non-Muslims due to its deep religious significance. It was named after the founder of the first Moroccan state, Moulay Idris I, said to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. His tomb, located here and only open to Muslims, is a significant pilgrimage site for the religious, making this town Morocco's holiest city.

While non-Muslims were historically barred from entering, the town gradually opened in the early 20th century, and today, visitors from all walks of life are welcomed." Even so, the mausoleum (tomb) itself remains off-limits to non-Muslims, preserving the town's spiritual heritage.

Reaching the Top of Moulay Idris: A Great Hike for Sunset Views

One of the highlights of any visit to Moulay Idris is the breathtaking view from the top of the city, especially at sunset. From the top you have a great view of the surrounding countryside, as well as the town below.

The climb can be a bit challenging, as Moulay Idris is built on two high hills and is not particularly friendly for anyone with mobility concerns. However, it's absolutely worth the effort if you are able to get to the top for sunset. From the main square, follow the many signs for "Terrace Panoramique," a winding path that will take you through narrow alleys, past traditional houses, and up to the lookout point.

As you ascend, you'll be greeted with panoramic views of the lush green valleys and the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis. Watching the sunset from this vantage point is a truly magical experience, as the golden hues bathe the town's whitewashed buildings and the surrounding countryside in a warm glow.

When visiting Moulay Idris, there’s no better place to stay than Dar Zerhoune, a traditional Moroccan guesthouse located at 42 Derb Zouak, Tazga, 50530 Moulay Idris. This charming dar, or guesthouse, offers an authentic Moroccan experience with modern comforts. I have personally stayed here and can recommend with high integrity.

The rooftop terrace (my personal favorite feature) is particularly special, offering sweeping views of the surrounding hills and valleys, perfect for stargazing or enjoying a meal after a day of exploring. A Day Trip to Volubilis from Moulay Idris: Roman History in Morocco

No trip to Moulay Idris is complete without a visit to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis, located just a short drive away.

Volubilis is one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa, and it was once a thriving city, strategically important due to its position near fertile lands and trade routes.

The site offers a fascinating glimpse into Morocco's Roman past, with its stunning mosaics, towering columns, and expansive forum still standing after nearly 2,000 years.

As you wander through the ruins, it’s easy to imagine the bustling life that once filled the streets of Volubilis. The impressive Basilica, Triumphal Arch, and Capitoline Temple transport you back to the days of the Roman Empire. For movie buffs, Volubilis was featured in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, adding an extra layer of intrigue to this historic site.

A day trip to Volubilis is easy to arrange (check out tours here!), and it’s well worth the visit. It is so close by you can actually see it from the top of Moulay Idris. After exploring the ruins, you can return to Moulay Idris for a peaceful evening, perhaps watching the sunset from the rooftop terrace of Dar Zerhoune.

The Cats of Morocco: A Cultural Icon in Moulay Idris and Beyond

As you explore Moulay Idris, Volubilis, and other Moroccan towns, you’ll likely notice the presence of a particular four-legged resident: cats. Morocco is home to a large population of cats, and they’ve become something of a cultural icon in the country.

These cats are often friendly and seen lounging in the sun, wandering through markets, or curled up in doorways. They’re a beloved part of Moroccan life, and in places like Moulay Idris, you might even find them following you around as you explore the winding streets.

Cats in Morocco are generally well-cared for by the local communities, and many tourists find their presence adds an extra layer of charm to the experience. Whether you’re a cat lover or not, their curious and calm demeanor is sure to bring a smile to your face as you navigate the narrow alleys of Moulay Idris.
