Embracing Independence: How to Prepare for Your First Solo Trip

Traveling solo is more than just a trip; it’s a transformative journey of growth, self-discovery, and empowerment. If there’s one experience I urge everyone to embrace at least once, it’s the adventure of going it alone.

Solo travel offers a unique opportunity to forge a deeper connection with yourself while exploring new environments. Though your destination may be far away, the journey truly begins at home—by building confidence, practicing independence, and understanding yourself better. Gaining these skills at home before taking off will ensure you are prepared for your first solo trip.

Prepare for Your First Solo Trip From Home!

Taking that first step into the unknown may feel intimidating, but with the right preparation, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. With practice over time in small steps, you can learn the skills you will need to travel solo before ever setting out on your journey.

Here’s how to start small, tackle challenges, and prepare for you ultimate solo adventure.

Step 1: Start Small – Learning to Enjoy Your Own Company

Before venturing into global solo travel, start by becoming comfortable with being alone. One thing I wish I had done before my first trip was to practice enjoying my own company in everyday settings. This small but crucial step builds the foundation for bigger challenges ahead.

How to begin gaining confidence to travel solo:

First Solo Trip
Challenge Yourself to Explore a Local Museum Solo
  • Explore Your City Alone: Visit a local museum, wander through an art gallery, or attend a cultural event. Take note of how it feels to shape your day without input from others. Reflect on the freedom of being in control of your own experience.

  • Savor a Solitary Meal: Dining alone may feel awkward at first, but it’s a transformative act of independence. Challenge yourself to try a new restaurant, skip previewing the menu, and embrace the spontaneity of your choice. It mirrors the experience of dining solo while traveling.

  • Go for a Solo Hike: Nature trails offer both physical exercise and a chance to connect with your thoughts. Spend time in silence, take in the beauty around you, and journal your reflections.

  • Navigate a Local Market: Practice interacting with strangers by visiting a farmer’s market or flea market. Hone your communication skills and get creative by using local transportation, such as a bus or train, to replicate experiences you’ll encounter abroad. If you are feeling brave, you may even try haggling. While this custom is not always accepted in the United States, it is very popular and sometimes expected abroad.

Each of these activities lay the groundwork for independence and self-trust, helping you prepare for solo travel’s bigger adventures.

Step 2: Reflect and Grow with Your Experiences Through Journaling

By capturing your experiences, emotions, and insights, a journal helps you process the moments that challenge and inspire you while revealing the person you are becoming.

Journaling isn’t just about documenting what happened—it’s about exploring how those moments affected you. Write about the joy of completing a solo hike, the initial discomfort of dining alone, or the frustration of navigating a new bus system. Reflect on how these experiences pushed you outside your comfort zone and taught you something new about yourself.

Take time to notice recurring patterns in your thoughts and reactions. Do you shy away from certain situations or feel a particular sense of accomplishment after tackling something unfamiliar? Use these reflections to better understand your strengths and pinpoint areas where you can grow.

To deepen the practice, set aside moments to write during your adventures and not just afterward. Capture the sensations, emotions, and thoughts that arise in the moment. Over time, these raw reflections can transform into a roadmap of growth that reinforces your confidence and prepares you for the unknown.

A travel journal is not merely a record; it’s a chronicle of your evolution. As you grow through the experiences you record, you’ll find it not only a tool for reflection but also an inspiring companion on your journey of self-discovery.

Step 3: Set Goals with Purpose – The SMART Framework

Using the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) method, you can create actionable goals that ensure you complete an activity to build your confidence.

For instance, if dining solo feels daunting:

  • Specific: Enjoy a solo meal at a new restaurant in a neighboring city

  • Measurable: Success could mean staying through the entire meal without discomfort, or measuring how long you are able to carry on a conversation with a stranger

  • Achievable: Practice monthly by dining alone at different establishments

  • Relevant: Gaining this skill enhances my solo travel experience

  • Time-bound: Accomplish this within six months before your trip at least 6 times

Another example, if mastering public transit feels intimidating:

  • Specific: Successfully navigate a new public transit system to reach a specific destination, such as a local museum or market

  • Measurable: Success means identifying the correct route, boarding the appropriate bus or train, and arriving at your destination without needing assistance

  • Achievable: Start by researching transit schedules and mapping out routes in advance, practicing with smaller trips in your city

  • Relevant: Understanding public transportation systems is essential for navigating foreign cities while traveling solo

  • Time-bound: Accomplish this by practicing transit navigation at least three times within the next month

Make a Plan for Success

Tailor SMART goals to challenges you anticipate, like striking up conversations, bartering with a shop keep, or exploring new places by reading a map. Making each goal easy to track, and identifying why it is important to you, will help you stay on track and complete each mission.

Step 4: Embrace Challenges as Gateways to Growth

Every challenge you face as a solo traveler is an opportunity to grow.

Start with manageable activities with tasks you may already be familiar with, but in a new nearby environment, and gradually work your way to more ambitious goals.

  1. Start Close to Home: Plan simple outings, like visiting a park or attending a local event. Track your feelings and growth in your journal.

  2. Take on Moderate Challenges: Try navigating public transit or planning a self-guided walking tour in your city. Build on skills you’ve already practiced.

  3. Step Into Unfamiliarity: Plan a day trip to a nearby town or city. Combine the skills you’ve learned—research, transit navigation, and engaging with strangers—to test your readiness. Unfamiliar things are only scary because they are just that, unfamiliar. By doing unfamiliar things we can actually develop the habit, and become used to it. That is the idea behind doing these activities at home before beginning your adventure.

By the time you’re ready to embark on an international solo trip, you’ll have the confidence, tools, and mindset needed to succeed. You will also have familiarity in the process of these forms of transit - you don't want your first time taking the bus to be in Spain (I promise).

Step 5: Celebrate Milestones

Solo travel is about more than reaching a destination; it’s about the independence and self-reliance you develop along the way. Celebrate each milestone—big or small.

Whether it’s mastering public transit or navigating a new city, every achievement is worth acknowledging. Share your progress with friends or on social media to inspire others and reflect on how far you’ve come. If you do not want to share publicly, make sure you journal about what you have accomplished so that when you look back you can celebrate your wins.

By the time you face your most ambitious goal—traveling solo to a foreign destination—you’ll already possess the tools, confidence, and mindset needed to succeed. Every challenge you undertake is a stepping stone, not just to independence but to the extraordinary adventure of solo travel.

Embrace the Unknown: Take Your First Solo Trip

Solo travel isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about discovering your own potential. It starts small, with steps like exploring your city or dining alone, building confidence and independence along the way.

Each challenge, from navigating public transport to planning a solo outing, equips you for greater adventures in unfamiliar destinations. Embrace the unknown with trust in your ability to grow, knowing that every step forward strengthens your resilience.

The real adventure begins not in the faraway places you’ll visit but in the moment you decide to take that first, bold step on your own.
