Amsterdam is a city bursting with culinary delights, from innovative modern dishes to classic Dutch flavors. As with many big tourist cities, there are an equal number of good local places to eat as there are bad and expensive restaurants - my goal is to help you avoid those! Picking a restaurant from this will guarantee a unique experience full of flavor.
As someone who has eaten my way through this picturesque city a few times now, I’ve curated a list of my favorite restaurants that showcase the best Amsterdam has to offer.
These recs are in no particular order on which one is the best. But, if I had to state my favorite it is probably the second entry for this post (based on flavor, price, and canal front dining options) - keep reading so you can find your favorite 😉
Each spot listed here offers its own unique charm, dishes to rave about, and settings to impress your guests that you won’t want to leave. Let’s dive in!

Located in the Jordaan neighborhood at Rozengracht 133, Pesca redefines the traditional seafood dining experience by allowing diners to hand-pick their meals from a ‘seafood market’-style counter (pictured here). The interactive and vibrant atmosphere is unlike anything else I have seen in Amsterdam.
Pesca has earned a reputation for its fresh seafood and lively setting. When visiting, the lobster and grilled prawns come highly recommended, both cooked to absolute perfection.
It’s easy to reach by tram, with several iconic photo stops nearby. Make sure to reserve in advance through their website, as tables fill quickly, particularly on weekends.

Tucked away in the Haarlemmerbuurt neighborhood at Brouwersgracht 60, De Belhamel offers a unique and intimate dining experience on the canalfront. This hidden gem serves delicious French-inspired cuisine with a romantic and authentic local atmosphere, far from the tourist crowds. Indulge in their exquisite duck confit or decadent truffle pasta, both of which showcase their culinary expertise.
The restaurant’s art nouveau design and rich history transport diners to another era. A short walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station, it’s both convenient and unforgettable. To enjoy the best views, request a table by the canal when booking a reservation. Reservations by phone are highly recommended here.

Situated in Nieuwmarkt at Zeedijk 84, Chun is a go-to spot for Korean comfort food. Their Korean egg toast is legendary and one of the only places in the city to eat this dish. The bulgogi is a must-try for bulgogi lovers. This tiny restaurant’s popularity means you should prepare for a long line (about 45 minutes at either location), as they don’t take reservations.
Located in the heart of Nieuwmarkt and easily accessible by metro or bike, Chun’s lively atmosphere and delicious offerings make it well worth the wait. Arrive early if you want to beat the crowd and enjoy their perfectly flavored egg toasts and unique Korean beverages.
4. De Waag

Located in Nieuwmarkt at Nieuwmarkt 4, De Waag combines history with a delightful dining experience. This restaurant occupies a historical building dating back to 1488, which originally served as a city gate and weigh house. The serene courtyard seating overlooks the lively Nieuwmarkt square, offering a charming escape from the bustle of the city. With classic Dutch pancakes and a selection of local beers on the menu, De Waag pays homage to Amsterdam’s culinary roots.
It’s only a five-minute walk from the Amsterdam Central Metro Station, making it easily accessible. For a memorable evening, reserve a courtyard table ahead of time, especially on weekends.

A little further off the beaten tourist path, in the lively De Pijp neighborhood at Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 8, Pasta e Basta delivers a dining experience unlike any other. This Italian restaurant features a talented staff who are not only top notch servers, but double as professional singers, serenading diners as they serve.
The atmosphere is both energetic and enchanting, making it a great choice for a fun night out with family, friends, or solo. Among their standout dishes are the truffle pasta (highly recommend) and tiramisu, which continue to draw praise from patrons. Located just a quick tram ride from the city center, it’s an accessible and delightful destination. Reservations are strongly recommended to guarantee a table at this ever-popular spot.

Nestled within Vondelpark, The Blue Treehouse Brewery is a beloved local treasure. This brewery offers a relaxed and inviting atmosphere where visitors can enjoy fantastic beers and a menu of delicious bites. The expansive hangout space makes it a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the park’s beauty.
Pair their crisp lagers with famous bitterballen, a classic Dutch snack that’s always a hit. Whether you arrive by foot or bike (you can not access by car), the brewery’s location within Vondelpark is convenient and easy to find. Arrive early to snag a prime spot on the terrace and soak up the park’s serene surroundings with a refreshing beverage.

Located in the Centrum district at Oudebrugsteeg 9, Café Nieuw Amsterdam is set within the historic Dutch East India House. This extraordinary building, once the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company during the 17th century, provides a unique dining backdrop filled with colonial history.
The menu offers modern twists on classics, and highlights include their mini pancakes, known as poffertjes, and a locally sourced cheese platter. Situated near Dam Square, it’s easily reachable by foot or tram. While they’re walk-in-friendly, I have tried to get a walk in table many times with no luck and weekends can be really busy, so plan accordingly to enjoy this exceptional venue and its storied past.
